CATALAN CULTURE: SAINT GEORGE



Saint George’s legend



This legend is the story about a hero who saved a princess and her kingdom from a dragon.

In a far away kingdom, there was a dragon who needed to eat something every day. The kingdom gave the dragon a lot of animals to eat. But one day the kingdom ran out of animals. The king decided to have a draw to find out which person would be eaten by the dragon. It was the princess!!

How do we celebrate it? 

  
Saint George’s Day is a popular festive day when books and roses are given.
The ritual of this celebration consists on going for a walk and buying a rose, a book or both to give to loved ones, family members and friends.
Boys give girls a rose and girls give boys a book.You can find a lot of books and rose’s stands of the city.
Saint George is the patron saint of Catalonia.

The "Jocs florals" is the writing of poems and stories.There are three categories (3 topics); country, nature, and love.
It is a literary contest. The winners receive one rose and one book.
